Comments on Taxonomy
NEW MEXICO P. c. gorzugi (Ward) was the one subspecies recognized in New Mexico(*07*), however, the nomenclature of the species has been changed to Pseudemys gorzugi (with no subspecies recognized) *12*.

2016: Rio Grande River Cooter is an erroneous common name for this species; Rio Grande Cooter was proposed as the English standard name in 2012 and Western River Cooter is also used. The Spanish standard name is Tortuga de Oreja Amarilla, though Jicotea del Rio Bravo is also used.
